Expedition 357 Preliminary Report: Atlantis Massif Serpentinization and Life
Gretchen L. Früh-Green, Beth N. Orcutt, Sophie Green, Carol Cotterill, and the Expedition 357 Scientists

International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 357 successfully cored an east–west transect across the southern wall of Atlantis Massif on the western flank of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge to study the links between serpentinization processes and microbial activity in the shallow subsurface of highly altered ultramafic and mafic sequences that have been uplifted to the seafloor along a major detachment fault zone. The primary goals of this expedition were to (1) examine the role of serpentinization in driving hydrothermal systems, sustaining microbial communities, and sequestering carbon; (2) characterize the tectonomagmatic processes that lead to lithospheric heterogeneities and detachment faulting; and (3) assess how abiotic and biotic processes change with variations in rock type and progressive exposure on the seafloor. To accomplish these objectives, we developed a coring and sampling strategy based around the use of seabed rock drills—the first time that such systems have been used in the scientific ocean drilling programs. This technology was chosen in hopes of achieving high recovery of the carbonate cap sequences and intact contact and deformation relationships. The expedition plans also included several engineering developments to assess geochemical parameters during drilling; sample bottom water before and after drilling; supply synthetic tracers during drilling for contamination assessment; gather downhole electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility logs for assessing fractures, fluid flow, and extent of serpentinization; and seal boreholes to provide opportunities for future experiments.

Proposal Calls

IODP: Apply to Sail on Three IODP Expeditions
The International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) is now accepting applications for three expeditions:

U.S.-affiliated scientists interested in participating in these expeditions can get more information and apply to sail through the U.S. Science Support Program – Apply Now webpage. Non-U.S.-affiliated scientists should apply through their IODP Program Member Offices. U.S. application deadline: August 15, 2016.

L’Oréal-UNESCO: For Women in Science International Awards: 2017 edition, Physical Sciences
Created in 1998, the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science International Awards program identifies and supports eminent women in science throughout the world. Each year, five Awards Laureates are recognized for their contributions to the advancement of science, in Life or Physical Sciences in alternating years. The 2017 edition of the Awards will designate five outstanding scientific researchers in the Physical Sciences, working in one of each of the following regions: Africa & the Arab States, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America, North America. Each of the five Laureates will receive an award of €100,000. Scientists around the world are invited to submit candidates for the L’Oréal-UNESCO Awards For Women in Science. To be considered eligible for an award, it is necessary to be nominated in writing by an eminent scientist. The next call for nomination is open until June 20, 2016.

Meetings & Activities

IODP-USSSP: Nominate an Ocean Discovery Lecturer!
The U.S. Science Support Program is seeking dynamic speakers to convey the excitement of the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) to geoscience communities and the public across the United States. Since 1991, more than 750 presentations have been made to audiences at U.S. colleges, universities, and informal learning centers. Your help is requested to identify scientists interested in participating as lecturers in the Ocean Discovery Lecture Series Program during the 2017-2018 academic year. Lectures focus on the discoveries and results of scientific ocean drilling and are primarily aimed at undergraduate and graduate students, museums, science departments, and the scientifically literate public. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming an Ocean Discovery Lecturer, email their name, institution, and potential lecture topic to the USSSP Office (usssp@LDEO.columbia.edu) by the nomination deadline of July 18, 2016.

Employment

Columbia University / LDEO: Postdoctoral Research Scientist
The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University seeks a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to participate in a Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative-funded study of the influence of natural oil and gas seeps on the pelagic ecosystem of the Gulf of Mexico. The position will include fieldwork in the Gulf of Mexico, laboratory analyses of field samples, analysis of metagenomic datasets and synthesis with environmental data sets. Applicants should have a PhD in marine ecological sciences and/or microbial bioinformatics and have a strong foundation in biological oceanography, molecular biology, and bioinformatics. Applicants with experience in microbial ecology and a strong bioinformatics background are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be willing and capable of participating in oceanographic cruises. Fieldwork will begin in July 2016 and applicants must be able to participate at that time. Appointment will be for 1-year, with continuation pending funding and progress. This position will be based at the Lamont campus in Rockland County, NY, near New York City. Search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears and will continue until the position is filled. If necessary, please contact Ajit Subramaniam (ajit@ldeo.columbia.edu), or Andrew Juhl (andyjuhl@ldeo.columbia.edu) for more information about the project.
