Workshop Rationale and Objectives: The Argentine Continental Margin (ACM) is a large and complex feature in an important area that has not been studied using scientific ocean drilling techniques. While some parts of the margin have an erosional character, recent seismic profiling studies show that the margin contains sediment drifts of at least Oligocene through Pleistocene age that may contain important climate records. The ACM underlies an important but undersampled portion of the global ocean conveyor belt, and new data from this area may prove critical to resolving key problems of the evolution of the Earth’s climate. This three-day workshop will explore how scientific ocean drilling can contribute to our understanding of the ACM. Topics will include the evolution of the South Western Atlantic Ocean and of the ACM, the variable nature of the sedimentary processes, facies, sediment sources and stability that have shaped the margin, the history and character of surface and deep circulation along this margin, the importance and likely nature of the climate records in these margin sediments, and opportunities for diagenetic, fluid flow and deep biosphere studies. One or more IODP drilling proposals are expected following the workshop.
IODP: Volunteer for an IODP Panel or Committee
The U.S. Science Support Program, in association with the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP), is seeking new U.S.-based members for the JOIDES Resolution Facility Science Evaluation Panel (SEP) and two senior scientists (one U.S.-based and one non-U.S.-based representative) to serve on the JOIDES Resolution Facility Board. New members will serve three-year terms beginning in October 2015. Scientists interested in volunteering for those opportunities should send a cover letter and a two-page CV to usssp@ldeo.columbia.edu by July 15, 2015. Letters should clearly indicate your primary field of expertise, briefly document any previous committee experience, describe your interest in the scientific ocean drilling programs, and identify your preferred panel or committee assignment. We strongly encourage the involvement of early career scientists, as well as those with more experience, on the Science Evaluation Panel.
Report on the 2015 DCO Deep Life Community Workshop, Lisbon
The DCO Deep Life Community convened at the Pestana Palace in Lisbon, Portugal, from 6-10 May 2015. 58 Community members from around the world attended, representing the fields of microbiology, geology, biogeochemistry, molecular biology, molecular ecology, and geochemistry. A major goal of the meeting was to share progress on the various projects that have been supported as a part of the Deep Life Community. The meeting included oral and poster presentations by investigators who received DNA sequencing support through the Census of Deep Life, by teams that worked on projects supported through the Rock-Hosted Community projects, and from the newly-funded Deep Life Community projects. In addition, the Deep Life Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) used the meeting to obtain input from the Community before compiling their next Community proposal.
NSF: Earth Sciences Postdoctoral Fellowships (EAR-PF)
The Division of Earth Sciences (EAR) awards Postdoctoral Fellowships to recent recipients of doctoral degrees to carry out an integrated program of independent research and education. The research and education plans of each fellowship must address scientific questions within the scope of EAR disciplines. The program supports researchers for a period of up to two years with fellowships that can be taken to the institution of their choice (including facilities abroad). The program is intended to recognize beginning investigators of significant potential, and provide them with research experience, mentorship, and training that will establish them in leadership positions in the Earth Sciences community. Because the fellowships are offered only to postdoctoral scientists early in their career, doctoral advisors are encouraged to discuss the availability of EAR postdoctoral fellowships with their graduate students early in their doctoral programs. Fellowships are awards to individuals, not institutions, and are administered by the Fellows. Full proposal deadline: January 12, 2016

IFREMER: Life at the extremes: microbial EcoGenomics of deep-sea extremophiles
The Lab for Microbiology of Extreme Environments (LM2E) in Brest (France) has an 18-month postdoctoral position available to carry out research in the field of deep-sea microbial ecology. We are looking for candidates that would be working on one of the two following projects. Project 1: Ecology of bacterial and archaeal communities in deep-sea brine lakes and hydrothermal vents systems: Samples from these extreme environments were collected during recent cruises in the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. The postdoctoral fellow will seek to understand the environmental constrains on microbial community structure, with a strong emphasis on thermal, pressure, redox and salinity gradients. The successful candidate will be co-advised by A. Murat Eren at the MBL in Woods Hole to utilize state-of-the-art bioinformatics tools for the analysis of high-throughput sequencing datasets of 16S rRNA amplicons, and shotgun metagenomes. Project 2: Patterns of gene expressions in model hyperthermophile Archaea: The LM2E hosts a collection of extremophile archaeal isolates from a wide variety of deep-sea environments. The postdoctoral fellow will perform comparative and functional genomics on several strains of Thermococcales with the aim to elucidate mechanisms of stress response and hyperthermophile life style adaptation. He will generate and analyze transcriptomique data from HP/HT bioreactor incubations. Montana State University: PhD Position, Astrobiology
The Priscu Research Group is seeking a motivated Ph.D. Student to work on a recently funded NASA Planetary Science and Technology Through Analog Research (PSTAR) grant. The three year interdisciplinary project, “Wireline Analysis Tool for Subsurface Observation of Northern ice-sheets (WATSON)”, will integrate recent technological drilling advancement and instrumentation to enable spatially resolved in-situ detection and characterization of organics, microorganisms, and potential biosignatures in the subsurface ice record. In-situ characterization of subsurface ice will lead to a better understanding of life in ice and constrain our understanding of how it can survive and be preserved in icy regions of planetary bodies. The primary detection method is a deep-UV native fluorescence instrument, a repackaged version of the recent SHERLOC instrument selected for Mars (http://www.hou.usra.edu/meetings/ georaman2014/pdf/5101.pdf). The proposed research will use the WATSON instrument to perform in-situ analysis of layered subsurface ice deposits in Greenland and a high elevation Rocky Mountain glacier. The graduate student will oversee ice core collection and perform geochemical and clean microbiological analysis on the cores to compare with data obtained from the in-situ deep-UV fluorescence instrument. Skillsets required: Field experience, flow cytometric and epifluorescence enumeration of bacteria, quantification and characterization of dissolved organic carbon, bacterial culturing, cell viability assays, molecular identification.
