The final phase of the Alvin submersible overhaul has just begun. When completed, HOV Alvin will join ROV Jason as the only US research submersibles capable of diving to 6500m. You are invited to join the team that will identify and describe the critical scientific objectives for abyssal research and the technological requirements to achieve them. The Deep Submergence Science Committee (DESSC) of UNOLS is organizing a series of three online, open workshops (on June 16, June 30, and July 7, 2020) to provide a forum for community input. Prior to the workshops, participants can watch pre-recorded presentations by subject matter experts, so that the 2-hour workshops focus on small-group discussion. The results of the discussions will be used to develop a manuscript describing abyssal science objectives and a white-paper outlining key tasks for a 6500-meter Alvin Science Verification Cruise. Please pre-register to participate in the workshops.
