C-DEBI Annual Meetings

Members of the C-DEBI community met annually to report on and discuss presently-active, C-DEBI-funded research and education and outreach projects. The size of the meetings were limited to approximately 70 people to support well-integrated discussions; priority invitation was given to those C-DEBI participants with active grants who had not presented on their work previously.

Final C-DEBI Annual Meeting, November 15-17, 2021

Sanctuary Beach Resort, Marina, California, USA

We continued to emphasize integration and collaboration at this final Annual Meeting through discussions of future plans as well as reporting on continuing C-DEBI research projects.  Meeting sessions consisted of plenary presentations, invited talks, lightning talks, and networking.

Our COVID-19 Statement: C-DEBI was committed to ensuring a safe and productive meeting. We actively watched advice, guidance, and restrictions for gatherings and travel. We expected only fully vaccinated people in attendance, a negative PCR test 72 hours prior to travel required for ALL attendees, and masking required indoors. The Sanctuary Beach Resort followed county guidelines regarding safety.

C-DEBI Virtual Annual Meeting, December 2-3, 2020

Due to the lingering challenges surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, we held a Virtual Annual Meeting in 2020 to maintain a connection with members of the C-DEBI community to present active research projects and support integrated discussions.  Research sessions consisted of plenaries, lightning talks and breakout rooms for Q&A, discussion, and informal community exchange.

Emphasizing diversity, equity and inclusion, the final session of the meeting consisted of the Fieldwork Initiative’s FISST Training, providing a practical safety tool kit based on survivors’ collective knowledge, as well as empowering students to prioritize their own safety and wellness in the field. While the FISST training was originally conceived for students and early career researchers, the training was open to all of our meeting attendees, including students, postdocs, and faculty, with the goal being to reach as many folks as possible to boost violence prevention. This training was presented by Jerika Loren Heinze, a Cultural Anthropologist and the Founder of the Fieldwork Initiative, a grassroots organization for students and researchers facing trauma, unsafe conditions, or sexual harassment and assault during research fieldwork.

Consequently, a relatively large fraction of the meeting was set aside for (i) many very brief presentations and (ii) lightning talks.

This annual meeting was preceded by a Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Professional Development Workshop on November 12, 2019.  The theme was “Project Management – The Process, The Team, and The Work” led by Randy Ribaudo and Larry Petcovic of SciPhD.
