Community College Research Internship for Scientific Engagement (CC-RISE)

CC-RISE is an eight-week, paid, summer research internship program for community college students run by the Center for Dark Energy Biosphere Investigations (C-DEBI). Students will gain firsthand exposure to the scientific process by working in a faculty-led research lab at the University of
Southern California (USC). In addition to research, students will participate in activities focusing on how to transition from a two-year college to a university and information on graduate school. At the end of the program, students will present their results to an audience of peers and mentors.


  • Paid ($3840 stipend), 8-week, non-residential, research internship at USC
  • Conduct research 40 hours/week, focused on a project in a microbiology/geochemistry lab
  • Mentored and trained in research procedures

Applicant qualifications:

  • Excited to do research (but do not have prior research experience)!
  • Currently enrolled in a community college, planning to transfer to a 4-year university within the year and major in a science discipline
  • Completed 4 semester-long science courses (biology, chemistry, math, geology, etc.), microbiology course strongly recommended
  • Minimum 3.25 Overall GPA
  • Must be a US citizen or permanent resident

  • Copy of transcript (unofficial version is accepted)
  • 2 letters of recommendation from faculty members
  • The application must be submitted electronically


Important dates:
Application due: March 14, 2014
