We are developing our resource library to include C-DEBI
specific resources, kits
for your classroom, and professional development through
lectures and workshops including on-line
teacher workshops, on-site
teacher training programs, and collaboration
with the Deep Earth Academy, which focuses on scientific
deep sea drilling.

On-Line Teacher Workshops
The West
Coast Center for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence (COSEE-West)
develops connections and interactions between cutting edge
university research and teacher-training workshops and training
programs through lecture series and in-person and on-line
workshops that enhance the teachers' instruction. C-DEBI will
work with COSEE-West staff and K-12 teachers to create new
lesson plans that explore the topics of C-DEBI research and
link them directly to State
Science Standards and the principles
of ocean literacy. C-DEBI and COSEE-West will develop
a series of taped lectures and presentations on the deep subseafloor
biosphere to be uploaded to the The
College of Exploration web site, home to the COSEE-West
online lecture series. After teachers view the presentations,
C-DEBI faculty and graduate students will be available for
teachers to interact and ask questions on their topics of
interest. Local C-DEBI graduate students will visit teacher’s
classrooms as part of a College Mentors program where personal
connections to students facilitate the likelihood that they
will see college as a logical career choice. Teachers may
sign up though the California State University system to receive
1 unit of credit for the workshop. More information
is forthcoming.
Kits for Your Classroom
For further assistance with implementing lesson plans in
their classrooms, we will provide small grants to select teachers
who have attended our on-line workshops. Additionally, teachers
may apply to receive deep biosphere "kits" that
will be developed, including lesson plans and classroom supplies.
Many of the technological-based modules require substantial
materials, which school systems cannot afford, store or repair.
More information is forthcoming.
On-Site Training Programs

NASA Astrobiology Institute at the University
of Hawaii
The deep subseafloor biosphere is an integral part of the
Astrobiology
Institute for Instructors (ALI'I) workshop. The week-long
training course for grade 7-12 teachers includes lectures
and activities led by research scientists and state-of-the-art
laboratory tours. A requirement of this program is the commitment
from the teacher to conduct workshops back in their home school
districts. |

Deep Earth Academy Partnership Opportunities
The Consortium for Ocean Leadership's Deep
Earth Academy facilitates and develops activities and
materials based on authentic data from shipboard research
expeditions including ours to strengthen students' mathematics,
science, and analytical skills for a lifetime of learning.
Deep Earth Academy coordinates learning activities based on
real scientific ocean drilling research expeditions carried
out by the IODP drilling vessel, the JOIDES
Resolution. Learn more:

- Be a Teacher
at Sea on a JOIDES Resolution expedition to learn
shipboard science alongside the science party and
translate your experience with live video broadcasting,
blogs and more from the ship to classrooms and the
general public.
- Experience scientific ocean drilling research with
the experts in the School
of Rock, a multiple day workshop onboard the JOIDES
Resolution for teachers, faculty, and museum educators.
