We are proud to support the following C-DEBI projects.
Sharon Cooper and Leslie Peart,
Ocean Leadership
Linking transformational science, education, outreach, and
communication as part of a C-DEBI "core" project
on the eastern flank of the Juan de Fuca Ridge
This project will support an education, outreach, and communications
(EOC) program during Atlantis/Jason expedition AT18-08 during
June/July 2011. This EOC program will continue the scientific
experiments begun during IODP Expeditions 301 (Summer 2004)
and 327 (Summer 2010), and will provide a longitudinal extension
of EOC efforts begun during separate IODP expeditions that
are of interest to C-DEBI.
This project aims to provide cross-cutting and robust education,
outreach and communication support to the already-funded hydrogeologic
experiments on the eastern flank of the Juan de Fuca Ridge.
Using proven outreach methods, highly qualified and experienced
educators, and full science personnel support, we will train
a core of educator/communicators to translate the transformative
science emerging from this set of expeditions and build awareness,
understanding and excitement around C-DEBI themes for students,
educators and the general public.

Sunshine Menezes, Sara Hickox, John Kirkpatrick, University
of Rhode Island
Communicating research on the marine deep biosphere
This education and outreach effort will develop scientifically
vetted resources for the journalism and science-writing communities
to assist in their coverage of exciting developments in deep
subseafloor biosphere research. Led by the Metcalf Institute
for Marine & Environmental Reporting in the University
of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography’s Office
of Marine Programs, project PIs will develop and disseminate
explanatory media backgrounders on each of the C-DEBI research
themes, including an annotated list of scientists with expertise
in relevant C-DEBI-related research topics. The project will
also identify appropriate spokespersons and outline options
for featuring presentations by C-DEBI scientists at key professional
development venues attended by science writers and journalists.
The activities of this pilot project set the stage for longer-term
initiatives to support further communication of C-DEBI research
throughout the life of the project.
