Prepare your Class
If you are interested in participating in this project, please email me at agturner@usc.edu. There are a few things you can do before the project starts to help prepare your classroom for interaction. It may also be helpful for your students to have some basic oceanography.
Here are some good websites to browse that are related to the Merian Cruise
Expedition 336 (the drilling cruise that installed the observatories the scientists will be servicing during the Merian cruise): http://iodp.tamu.edu/scienceops/expeditions/midatlantic_ridge_microbio.html

Check out some pre-existing lesson plans: http://www.oceanleadership.org/education/deep-earth-academy/educators/classroom-activities/ ** Some of these activities we have adapted for special education students and will be part of the project. Others can be easily adaptable if you’d like to incorporate them into your classrooms as well.**
Here are some other sites that we’ll be using periodically throughout the project
TeacherTube: http://www.teachertube.com/ **Free but requires a login and password**
NeoK12 (a good resource for general oceanography materials as well as other topics): http://www.neok12.com/
YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/ **Some schools do not allow access to YouTube. In such cases, we’ll try to post equivalent (non-YouTube) material.**
Adobe Flash: http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ **It is certainly not required that you have it but there may be a video here and there that requires it.**
QuickTime: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ **Not required but can be helpful with some videos.**
Feedback
At the end of the activity, we’d like to know how effective the Classroom Connection has been in teaching mandated curricula in your classroom. Let us know how we did!
