Luis Cifuentes

Professor, Chemical Section, Department of Oceanography, Executive Associate Dean, College of Geosciences, Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi, Texas

Dr. Luis Cifuentes earned a bachelor’s degree with honors in Chemistry from Swarthmore College, an M.S. degree in Marine Studies, and a Ph.D. degree in Oceanography, both from the University of Delaware. He began his career with Texas A&M University in 1988 as an assistant professor of oceanography and proceeded through the ranks to full professor. Beginning in November 2004, Dr. Cifuentes served as Executive Associate Dean and Associate Dean for Research in the College of Geosciences and in July 2007, assumed the position of Interim Vice Provost for the University. In March 2009, he again served as Executive Associate Dean and Associate Dean for Research in the College of Geosciences, at which time he was heavily involved with the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program. As of September 1, 2010, Dr. Cifuentes became the Associate Vice President for Research and Scholarly Activity and Dean of Graduate Studies at Texas A&M University Corpus Christi.

Dr. Cifuentes has taught oceanography courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level at Texas A&M. His research interests include stable isotope biogeochemistry with emphasis on carbon and nitrogen isotopes, biogeochemistry of estuarine and coastal waters, human impacts on aquatic environments and the use of scientific data in developing public policy.

Dr. Cifuentes and his wife, Lauren, a professor of Educational Psychology, reside in Corpus Christi and have three children.
