C-DEBI External Advisory Board
Professor, School of Oceanography and Center for Astrobiology
and Early Evolution, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington
John Baross received a BS degree in microbiology and chemistry
from San Francisco State University and a PhD degree in marine
microbiology from the University of Washington. His research
specialty is the ecology, physiology and molecular phylogeny
of microorganisms from hydrothermal vent and subseafloor environments.
Dr. Baross has particular interests in the microbiology of
extreme environments and in the significance of submarine
hydrothermal vent systems for the origin and evolution of
life and for the possibility of life on other planets in similar
settings. Recently, he co-edited with Woodruff Sullivan, Planets
and Life – The Emerging Science of Astrobiology (Cambridge
Press, 2007). Dr. Baross is a fellow of the American Academy
of Microbiology, an associate member of the National Academy
of Sciences, and a member of the American Society for Microbiology,
the American Association for the Advancement of Science, The
American Chemical Society, the American Geophysical Union,
and the International Society for the Study of the Origin
and Evolution of Life. He has previously served on more than
forty national and international committees including service
as co-chair of the National Research Council (NRC, National
Academy of Science) Committee on the Origins and Evolution
of Life (2000-2003), the Committee for a Review of Programs
to Determine the Extent of Life in the Universe (2001-2002)
and as a member of the Ridge Inter-Disciplinary Global Experiments
(RIDGE) Steering Committee and of the RIDGE Observatory Coordinating
Committee. He also served as chair of the NRC Task Group on
The Limits of Organic Life in the Universe (2004-2007) and
as a member of the Steering Group for the Workshop on Size
Limits of Very Small Microorganisms (1998-1999), the Task
Group on Sample Return from Small Solar System Bodies (1997-1998),
and the Ad Hoc Task Group on Planetary Protection (1991-1992).
Dr. Baross is currently the chair of the Scientific Advisory
Council (SAC) for the International Census of Marine Microbes
(ICoMM), a member of the International Executive Committee,
the “Deep Carbon Observatory”, sponsored by the
Sloan Foundation, and a member of the NRC committee on Planetary
Protection Standards for Icy Bodies in the Outer Solar System.
