The marine subsurface may be the largest biome on Earth,
but it is also the least accessible. The last decade has seen
tremendous growth in research activities, focusing on global-scale
biogeochemical cycling of carbon and energy and on a census
of subsurface life and metabolic activities. This RCN supports
coordination and networking activities among this growing
and dynamic young research field of scientists studying life
deep in rock and sediments, away from sunlight and surface
nutrients. The goals of this RCN are to:
- Develop an interactive community of deep-biosphere
researchers
- Facilitate coordination of science between
deep-biosphere drilling projects
- Stimulate interaction and education among
disparate disciplines
- Enable synthesis and integration of data
and technology advances
Participation in this RCN is open to and encouraged for all scientists
in the US and abroad interested in deep biosphere research. A dedicated
meeting held in 2007 identified circa 30 "founding members"
and developed a framework for developing a community. These activities
are aimed at the goal of developing a sustained institute for deep
biosphere research, "DEBI" (Dark Energy Biosphere Institute).
DEBI will accomplish these goals with the following main supporting
activities:
